Long considered to be the epicenter of California’s country music scene, The Palomino Club, (which closed in 1995)  re-opened its doors for a one-night-only benefit concert at its original North Hollywood location on Monday, October 8 at 7:30pm. Presented by Rebelle Road Productions, the event showcased a stellar lineup of legacy and up-and-coming artists and had 250 people in attendance. $40,000 was raised for the Valley Relics Museum whose mission is to collect, preserve, interpret, and present the history of The San Fernando Valley.

Americana icons and Palomino veterans Jim Lauderdale, Rosie Flores, James Intveld and his Honky Tonk Palominos, as well as members from the original PALOMINO RIDERS house band were the stars of the show. James' Intveld's band Honky Tonky Palominos included; Bob Gothar Guitar, Kips Dabbs Drums, Lorne Rall Bass, Marty Rifkin Steel, Mike Turner Guitar.  The Palomino Riders included; Jeffrey Paul Ross Guitar, Skip Edwards Keys, Harry Orlove Guitar, Paul Marshall Bass, Dave Raven Drums, Dave Pearlman Steel.

Original Barn Dance founder Ronnie Mack, who hosted a monthly showcase there until it closed, MC'd the event. Also performing were: Jeffrey Steele, Jack Tempchin, Liz Brasher, Jade Jackson, Brian Whelan, Leslie Stevens, KP Hawthorn, Sam Morrow, Tracy Dawn Thompson, Alice Wallace, Martin Etzioni and Ryan Hedgecock of Lone Justice, Chip Kinman of Rnk & File and The Textones.  There was also a Johnny Cash Tribute + more guests.

In addition to the concert performances, the Palomino Rides Again fundraiser featured a BBQ dinner, as well as numerous artifacts from the museum’s collection of country music and Hollywood history including original pieces from the Palomino, Nudie Cohen items, and one of the famous “Nudie Mobile” cars.  Music memorabilia and specially donated items were available for auction.

“The roots of California’s country music scene were first planted in Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley,” said museum founder Tommy Gelinas. “No place represented that more closely than the legendary Palomino Club so we’re thrilled to show off memorabilia that hasn’t been seen in almost 40 years.”

Recognized as one of the country’s greatest nightclubs, it has been referred to as the west coast’s Grand Ole Opry.  Popular artists from every decade considered it their musical home including: Johnny Cash, Rose Maddox, Buck Owens, Glen Campbell, Emmylou Harris, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Linda Ronstadt, among others.

Located in an obscure, working class section of L.A. which was a far cry from trendy clubs of Hollywood, The Palomino was so popular that artists including Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, George Harrison, and John Fogerty also gave impromptu performances.
