The Americans--Hitting the Road and Heading Your Way

The Americans...led by Patrick Ferris, whose deep voice doesn't sound like Richard Manuel's but feels like it -- on "Sweet and Low," a small essay on the way a regretful mind doubles back on itself forever."
-- The legendary Greil Marcus in Believer magazine

The David Letterman Show (Link above in email)--The Americans are a band that moves between the genres of Rock n’ Roll, Rockabilly, and Americana while rooting themselves in rural blues and traditional American folk music. They have shared the stage with X, Los Lobos, JD McPherson, T Bone Burnett and Patti Smith among others. They accompanied Ryan Bingham in 2011 and 2012 on his Junky Star and Tomorrowland tours. And now they will be playing Seattle on Monday, June 3rd at The Tractor Tavern. We would love for you to help spread the word!

People are starting to pay attention--the band has performed on NPR’s “New Sounds Today” at WNYC in support of the song “Sweet and Low”, a Lord Tennyson poem adapted to music by the band and included in Son of a Rogue’s Gallery a two-disc collection of pirate ballads and sea shanties. Son of a Rogue’s Gallery was produced by Hal Willner and executive-produced by Johnny Depp and The Americans sit alongside such luminaries as Keith Richards, Tom Waits, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave and many more.

Their new record, Home Recordings was recorded live in a Los Angeles basement and features nine songs that were mixed by Chris Wonzer at Atlantis and mastered by Reuben Cohen of Lurssen Mastering and include two bonus tracks, “Kokomo Joe’s” and “Prison Yard Walk”. The band consists of Patrick Ferris on vocals and guitar, Zac Sokolow on guitars and violin, Jake Faulkner on upright and electric bass and Tim Carr on drums and percussion.

Their live show is not- to- miss featuring original music --a brash mixup of blues, folk and rockabilly leading to points its way to rock n’ roll-- with great vocals and musicianship (fast pickin’!)

The band is available for interviews and in-studio radio visits.

Steven Casper & Cowboy Angst Cause Some "Trouble"

The band moves deeper into American roots territory

Los Angeles, CA April 2013—Having just had a successful European release, Steven Casper will now be releasing, Trouble, in the U.S (July 16,2013). Trouble is Casper’s fifth record and the fifth time working with Producer, Ira Ingber (Bob Dylan, Canned Heat, Captain Beefheart). As Casper says, “I see his ideas growing with the new version of the band’s sound.”

What is the new version of the band’s sound? Trouble finds Casper taking in two new members of his band, Cowboy Angst, which has led the band in new directions. (Former players, Ross Levinson and Glen Lynskey moved on to other endeavors). The new additions have helped to guide the music deeper into American roots music while still keeping the rock n’ roll feel. “I would describe our music as aggressive Americana,” says Casper, “with influences of country, blues, Cajun, folk and rock and roll. The change in instrumentation has provided new colors for the songs and my writing to grow into.”

With the steady rhythm section of Jay Nowak on drums and Herb Deitelbaum on bass, Casper added the established multi-instrumentalists, John McDuffie and Carl Byron to the fray. McDuffie is Rita Coolidge’s longtime guitar player and Music Director and on Trouble contributes lead and slide guitars, pedal steel, lap steel and mandolin. Byron has worked with such greats as Bo Didley and the Spencer Davis Group and adds piano, accordion and Hammond B3 organ to the mix.

The stellar additional musicians include Matt Cartsonis (Van Dyke Parks) on banjo, Craig Eastman on Fiddle (Ray Charles), two of the famed McCrary Sisters, Charity and Linda on Backing vocals and Producer, Ira Ingber lending a hand on guitar, dobro and backing vocals.

The record is in the form of an EP, which boasts 6 tracks. “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” is a blues number with a bit of a Rolling Stones vibe and is a song where the excellent McCrary sisters use a gospel back up. “Soul Deep” is a sensitive tune boasting a lap steel solo. The title track “Trouble” is where Casper’s Louisiana influence from his childhood comes through—his parents were crazy about Louisiana music –and the accordion and pedal steel both take solos. Casper tried to bring in some Tex Mex flavor with the song, “How am I Gonna Miss You if You’re Not Gone”, but it quickly took on a Cajun vibe with heavy accordion. “Hey Marie” is more of a rock and roll number and a heavily played favorite on European radio. The front porch version of “How am I Gonna Miss You if You’re Not Gone” brings a summer afternoon of sitting on the porch with friends drinking beer and playing music, and adds Matt Cartsonis on banjo and Craig Eastman on fiddle.

Trouble finds Casper moving in a positive direction and establishes him as a solid roots artist. “I normally don’t have a preference for the type of song we record as long as it fits the band,” he says, “but having written the next EP already, there are some songs I know are going to have an ambient roots feel to them and I’m truly looking forward to that.”

New American Farmers and Susie Glaze & The HiLonesome Band reviewed in the #25 issue of M Music & Musicians Magazine-on the stands soon and through May 21st!

White Swan:
"If Susie Glaze were a newscaster, this crazy world would be a lot easier to take. On grisly murder ballads and carefree romps alike, the Tennesse native sings smooth and sweet, her voice like buttermilk…Wherever Glaze goes her band is right there with her, providing impeccable acoustic instrumentation and sometimes handling lead vocals. The presentation is as seamless as the songs are engaging."-M Music

Brand New Day:
"Paul Knowles and Nicole Storto don't need help--these insightful folkie rockers hold a mirror to Americana as well as anyone-but Tom Waits trumpeter Ara Anderson and the Real Vocal String Quartet drop by anyway, making this rich and unique disc that much stronger."-M Music

YOU CAN QUOTE ME:

RICH MAHAN--BLAME BOBBY BARE
Rich Mahan chats with The Americana Music Show: www.americanamusicshow.com/rich-mahan/

" Blame Bobby Bare should be listened to just a little more on the loud side. The two other elements that might enhance the listening experience are a boatload of beer and a bottle of tequila. The songs are upbeat and the lyrics are witty and to the point. I liked the story behind the album title and rather than spoil it, I think I’ll let you pick up the CD on your own to find out what I’m talking about. You can’t listen to this music and not put a smile on your face" --Americana Gazette

"I can’t wait to hear more from Mahan. He’s got the vocal chops, the writing, and the humor to pull them off. Take a listen to this, you’re going to love it!"--Music News Nashville

"Rich Mahan’s solo debut Blame Bobby Bare is fun and sometimes just goofy (“Mama Found My Bong,” “Rehab’s For Quitters”), but it’s the soulful “Favorite Shirt” with back-up vocals from Bekka Bramlett that will stick with you."--Sun 209

DAVE ARMO-POETS ON THE WALL

Dave Armo hitting the airwaves in Europe! Heavy play on Dollard Radio, ISA Radio France, Roots Revival, ZuidWest FM and Peelgrass Radio!

"(A) literary type singer/songwriter, Armo isn’t aiming for the masses so much as aiming for the heart…Armo is a reservoir of thoughts and feelings that many often look to others to articulate."--Midwest Record

" Should be called David HEART-O, because the emotions, poetics, and soul he's carrying into his music is more than an armful!"--Roctober Magazine

"...very very good discovery ... good songs , super sound, voice and melodies , the musical arrangements are really superb...the californian school in a way ...his music is just beautiful."--Mike Penard, ISA Radio

"Inspired by literature, his lyrics are like novels put to music. He produces such melodic and full songs and sings them with grace, compassion and humor when appropriate…A good example of Independent songwriting"--Keys and Chords

SUSIE GLAZE AND THE HILONESOME BAND--WHITE SWAN JUST RELEASED ON MARCH 19TH!

"They’re a band who could be the next bright stars of the roots music-folk-Americana world. This new album could be the launch vehicle that does that for them."--Acoustic Americana

"Once again, Susie Glaze & The Hilonesome Band have surpassed themselves. In their new, fourth album, White Swan, the celebrated newgrass group stretches the boundaries of their folk/bluegrass/mountain music roots to achieve a fusion of sound that is at once traditional and wonderfully fresh...this is one gorgeous album – the “best yet” for a group that has long enjoyed critical acclaim."--Folkworks

"These artists have a performance chemistry that works, with tight arrangements of fiddle, mandolin, guitar and upright bass, and Glaze’s authentic Appalachian voice – by way of Southern California – is icing on their musical confection. The Ernest Troost song, “Evangeline,” allows her an opportunity to show more ache and tenderness in her confident holler style, and she sings in downright shades of Sandy Denny (Fairport Convention, Fotheringay) on the dulcimer-and-fiddle traditional English/Irish folk ballad “Fair Ellender.”--Music News Nashville

"Unlike so much modern music that is canned and homogenized, the songs on Brand New Day are fresh, sincere, reflective, and real. On the band's web site, Knowles says "We don t have all the answers, or maybe even any, but we have to ask the questions." If that's not the right attitude, we don't know what is. Nice open arrangements, wonderfully warm vocals, smart melodies, and perceptive lyrics...it all adds up to one cool damn listening experience."

"Brand New Day, the upcoming debut release under the band’s new nom de plume, weaves tales of lives adrift in a new reality, all set atop a superb Americana soundtrack. Good And Sober, perhaps my favorite NAF song of the album, weighs in on the revelation for why it’s finally time to find a cure, “when I was a boy each day was a gift, and I want to unwrap them again.” Everywhere, the competing nomination to Good And Sober, is a lighthearted, jangly romp featuring Gene Parsons on banjo that clearly invokes his Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers heritage…I also have to point out there are several sweet, sweet injections of trumpet from Nicole Storto…"-Twangville

"If beneficial for everyone thinking like that appeals to you, the performances on Brand New Day will be equally appealing. Knowles and Storto’s lyrics encourage the listener not to fall for the commercialism and materialism of our world today. Proclaiming the joys of a simpler way of living, the lyrics are fed by the twirling trumpeting of Ara Anderson, Dave Zirbel’s wailing and winding pedal steel, Gene Parson’s rollicking banjo, Dave Walker’s work on the slide guitar and The Real Vocal String Quartet’s ethereal echoes, bring the lyrics from words to wisdom."--Grateful Web

GRANT LANGSTON-WORKING UNTIL I DIE

Grant Langston #9 on the Roots Music Report True Country chart for the week of March 7th!

"Working Until I Die is a collection of honky tonk songs that evoke the spirit of some timeless Western singers (Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson) and a few of the recent greats (Dwight Yoakam, Randy Travis, George Strait, and even Willie again). I said “the spirit,” not the voices. There’s a fiesty, witty, independent streak to Grant Langston that ensures he is nobody’s musical clone." -Parcbench

"Grant Langston is a Los Angeles based country-rocker who’s just put out a new album after many years called Working Until I Die. It’s got a great blend of high energy foot stompers, a few tear jerkers, and yeah, a little bit of that Bakersfield sound here and there. I’m adding “I Fall For It Every Time,” “Try Me,” and “Honky Tonk Special” to rotation."--Americana Music Show

"Working Until I Die is the latest effort from Alabama native, real-deal, homespun Urban Cowboy, Grant Langston. Delivering genuine tales of heartache, hard-times, hard-work and honky-tonk, Langston proves to be LA’s own Poet of the Common Man, singing “for the Rednecks as Hollywood drunkards cry out for more.”'-Turnstyled Junkpiled

"On Singer-Songwriter, Grant Langston's new album Working Until I Die there are rollicking Honky Tonk tunes, Alt-country workouts and sweet Ballads--all of it steeped in the West Coast-styled Country of Langston's own heroes. Working Until I Die is even more impressive thanks to Langston's top-notch vocals and excellent work on the guitar, piano and mandolin."--Robert Kinsler, Desert Star Weekly

TED RUSSELL KAMP--NIGHT OWL

"Wistful, raspy vocal and engaging lyrics. Recommended listening."-- Robert K. Oermann at MusicRow.com

"The Laurel Canyon mythos rings true throughout this Americana set. This is definitely California desert country with the top down. With his gritty self styled voice. Like Bob Dylan’s Nashville recordings (or the) soulful country tracks that came out of Muscle Shoals.Ted Russell Kamp pays tribute to a lot of American music heroes (while) weaving gravitas throughout this song cycle."
-- Dan Harr at musicnewsnashville.com

"If only Nashville was pumping out country songs with that kind of understated pathos ... another fine set of melodic country rock tunes on Night Owl. infused with warm soul ... with a grace and plainspoken honesty. Modesty and an unwillingness to play games likely prevent Kamp from getting the acclaim he deserves. Don’t let the heartfelt, soulful music suffusing Night Owl pass you by."
-- Michael Toland The Big Takeover

"Terrific. Ted is a star on the rise...in the tradition of great troubadours like Guy Clark...an impressive record."-- No Depression, USA

"Driven Back is an eclectic mix of Americana, Roots-Rock, Country and Power pop led by the powerful vocals of Jesse Bellamy. The songs are heartfelt and powerful. Well delivered and colorful."--Jedi Gro
"Modesty and an unwillingness to play games likely prevent Kamp from getting the acclaim he deserves (seriously, where are his Americana Music Association awards?), so don’t let the heartfelt, soulful music suffusing Night Owl pass you by."--Michael Toland, The Big Takeover

"This is definitely California desert country with the top down...Night Owl is a part of the continuum from when Graham Parsons made California home and helped start a movement that still goes on today with the new country sounds coming out of the west coast."--Music News Nashville
Rich Mahan Blame Bobby Bare

"Blame Bobby Bare should be listened to just a little more on the loud side. You can’t listen to this music and not put a smile on your face"--Americana Gazette

"Bless Bobby Bare! Well, always bless him, but this time specifically bless him for inspiring this fun, well-crafted, countrified outsider Opry music album. And while you’re at it, blame and bless David Allan Coe, Vince Gill, Shel Silverstein, Kinky Friedman, and even Jimmy Buffett. I love you Mahan!"
--Chicago's Roctober Magazine

Blame Bobby Bare retains its #1 position in both the Americana/AAA album and singles charts on Airplay Direct. "I'll get Off The Booze" was the greatest gainer this week on the chart with a 249 spincrease over last week. Mahan's song "Tequila y Mota" is on Delta inflight audio programming through the end of February.

Old Californio on MTV's The Hive

SEVEN SONGS TO TAKE YOU THROUGH YOUR WEEKEND-VAN TOFFLER (President of MTV’s Music & Logo Group)

“Sundrunk Angels” by Old Californio (Sundrunk Angels)

Think I found this one in a review in Q magazine — strange to find a modern ’70s-esque Laurel Canyon folk band with a touch of My Morning Jacket thrown on top in a foreign rag. Anyway, a great Sunday summer morning vibe.
